Our Materials
Every Van Dort piece is made using one of two materials, chosen for how they wear in real life, not just how they photograph.
925 Sterling Silver
Our silver pieces are crafted from genuine 925 sterling silver, plated in either 14k gold, 18k gold or rhodium for a lasting shine. This is the material we choose for our more delicate designs, necklaces, rings, and fine details where a warmer, more luxurious finish matters most.
316L Stainless Steel
Our stainless steel pieces are made from 316L surgical-grade steel, plated in 18k gold or rhodium. This is our most durable material, fully waterproof, tarnish-resistant, and built for daily wear without a second thought. You'll find this in our hoops, bangles, and everyday chains.
How to Care for Your Jewelry
For 925 Silver pieces:
- Avoid contact with water, perfume, and lotion
- Store separately in the pouch provided, away from other jewelry
- Put jewelry on last, after getting dressed and applying skincare
- Gently polish with a soft, dry cloth to maintain shine
For 316L Stainless Steel pieces:
- Fully waterproof, safe to wear in the shower, while swimming, or during light exercise
- Still benefits from a gentle wipe with a soft cloth after wear
- Store in the pouch provided when not in use to avoid scratching against other jewelry
General Tips for Longevity
- Remove jewelry before sleeping to avoid unnecessary friction
- Avoid direct contact with chlorine and saltwater, even on waterproof pieces, for long-term shine
- Clean gently, avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive cloths, or ultrasonic cleaners
- If a piece needs extra care, a jewelry polishing cloth (available at most jewelers) works well for both materials
A Note on Plating
Gold and rhodium plating is a thin layer applied over the base metal. With daily wear, this plating may soften gradually over time, this is a natural part of how plated jewelry ages, not a manufacturing fault. Following the care tips above will help your pieces stay beautiful for as long as possible.
